    A cheapskate is someone who tries to spend as little money as possible — and the word is used to show . The picture is not a poor person with nothing. It is someone who has some money, but hates opening their wallet: they split a bill to the last coin, they bring a mean gift, they never offer to pay. Informal. American and British speakers both use it. Calling someone a cheapskate is a jab. Friends may tease with it; it is not a polite description, and it is not a kind word for a person who is simply careful with money.
