A chart-topping song, album, or group is the one sitting at number one on the weekly music list — the chart that ranks what sold or streamed the most that week. Radio and magazines love this word because it sounds like a win: not just popular, but the most popular right now. It is almost always an adjective before a noun (a chart-topping single, a chart-topping act), and it is about that week’s list, not “famous forever.” A song can be chart-topping in one country and nowhere in another. People stretch it a little for books, apps, or podcasts that lead their own lists, but the home of the word is still pop music. It is informal-to-neutral publicity language, not a technical term.
