Charlemagne was a real king, not a fairy-tale name. He lived from 742 to 814 and ruled the Franks, a people in the land that later became France and Germany. He brought most of western Europe under one Christian rule, and in 800 the Pope gave him the title Holy Roman Emperor. The name itself means “Charles the Great.” He set up laws and pushed schools, books, and church learning, so later Europeans often treat him as a builder of their world. You meet him in history class, not in street talk. Though actually, people at the time did not walk around saying “Holy Roman Empire” the way a textbook does; they knew a powerful Charles who had been crowned in Rome.
