Carolingian names the time and the family of — Charles the Great — who in the late 700s and early 800s ruled a huge part of western Europe. often call him a Holy Roman Emperor. Though actually, he was crowned emperor in Rome in the year 800; the later title “Holy Roman Empire” is a neater label people put on that world after the fact. His family is the point of the word: Carolingian law, Carolingian kings, a Carolingian church. Historians also talk about a Carolingian Renaissance, meaning a push to copy books, tidy writing, and teach Latin again, not a rebirth of painting like the later Italian one. Used as a noun, a Carolingian is a person of that dynasty. It is a history-classroom word, not everyday talk.
