Do not mix it up with Chaplin, as in Charlie Chaplin the film actor; that surname grew from the same old word. English once had its own word, handpriest, but this French one won.
do not mix it up with Chaplin不要把它跟Chaplin搞混, as in Charlie Chaplin the film actor就是電影演員Charlie Chaplin(卓別林)的Chaplin; that surname grew from the same old word那個姓氏其實是從同一個古字演變來的。English once had its own word, handpriest英文本來自己有一個字handpriest, but this French one won但最後是這個法文來的字贏了。
組成From Middle English chapeleyn, from Old French chapelain, from Latin cappellānus, from cappella (chapel). A chaplain was the priest attached to a chapel. Doublet of capelin (a small fish) — same Latin word, different life. The surname Chaplin is a variant.
