A channeller (American spelling channeler) is a person who claims that a spirit — often someone who has died — can enter them and speak through their voice. The practice around this is called channelling: believers say the channeller’s own self steps aside for a while, and another mind uses their mouth; listeners treat the words as a message from that other side. People who do not believe it say the speaker is acting, dreaming aloud, or fooling themselves. You will meet the word in New Age books and spiritualist circles, not in science class. It sits near medium, and near Taiwan’s 乩童, but it is not the same job: those are older or local spirit-medium traditions, with their own rules. A channeller is the modern, often English-language, version of “someone the dead talk through”. Though actually, people also use channel as a verb in a much looser way — “she was channelling her grandmother’s cooking” — which only means copying a style, with no spirits at all.
