A chalkboard is a hard board you write on with chalk — the same classroom thing many people call a . Teachers write lessons on it; students copy them down; you wipe the writing off with an or a cloth. Though actually, chalkboard is the word you hear more in American English; is very common in British English, and it is also the word most students already know. The board is often dark green now, not only black, which is one reason some people prefer chalkboard. Today many rooms have or screens instead, so the word can feel a little old, but everyone still understands it. People also stretch it: a chalkboard menu in a café is a menu written in chalk, even if the board is not black.
