In yoga and some Eastern ways of thinking about the body, a chakra is a point where energy is said to move in and out. People often talk of seven main chakras along the spine, from the base of the body up to the crown of the head. Each one is pictured as a kind of wheel or spinning disc. Though actually, this is a belief and a teaching, not something a doctor can photograph in a hospital. In English class and in clinics you will not need it; you will hear it in yoga studios, wellness shops, and spiritual talk. Some English speakers also use it loosely for “a place of energy,” even when they are not really doing yoga.
