To chain-smoke is to smoke cigarettes one right after another, lighting the next with almost no break — sometimes even from the last cigarette. It is a well-known informal verb. It usually sounds a little critical: people say it when the smoking feels heavy or restless, not when someone just has one cigarette after dinner. You might chain-smoke through a long night of work, or while waiting and worrying. There is no metal chain. The picture is a chain of cigarettes, one linked to the next.
chain-smoke 是口語動詞，意思是一根接一根抽菸，中間幾乎不停，有時甚至用上一根的菸來點下一根。這個字通常帶點批評的語氣，用來說抽得很兇、很焦躁，不會用在飯後只抽一根的人身上。
例句「You might chain-smoke through a long night of work」就是典型的情境，熬夜工作時一根接一根地抽。字面上沒有鐵鍊，畫面是一根菸接著一根菸，像鏈子一樣連起來。
