The cervix is the narrow passage at the lower end of a woman’s — a kind of neck or doorway between the and the vagina. Doctors talk about it in pregnancy, in smear tests, and in illness such as cervical cancer. The word is medical Latin, so it turns up in clinics and health class more than in ordinary chat. Latin cervix meant “neck,” and the body part was named for that shape: a narrower joining piece, not the whole womb. The usual English plural is cervixes; you may also meet cervices in medical writing.
