Centrist describes political beliefs that are not extreme: not far left and not far right, sitting in the middle of the usual map of parties. The same word is a noun for a person who holds those views. A centrist often looks for compromise and for a mix of change and keeping things as they are. You meet it in news and political talk. It is not a rude word, but it is not always praise either: some people say it to mean careful and fair, and others say it to mean bland, or unwilling to pick a side. Though actually, what counts as “the centre” moves with the country and the year — a centrist in one place can sound left or right in another. The word is about not being at the edge, not about a fixed list of ideas you could memorise.
