A unit of liquid measure equal to one hundredth of a litre — so 100 centilitres make one litre, and one centilitre is 10 millilitres. You will see it written cl. It matters mostly on drink bottles in Europe: a wine bottle says 75cl, a small beer 33cl. Outside that, English speakers hardly use it — for cooking and medicine everyone says millilitres, and for anything larger, litres. So treat it as a label-reading word rather than a speaking word. The American spelling is centiliter.
