The older name for the Celsius temperature scale — the one where water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100. Centigrade and Celsius mean exactly the same numbers; only the name changed. Scientists officially agreed to say Celsius in 1948, partly because centigrade already meant something else in French measuring, so today you will hear Celsius on the news and in schoolbooks. But centigrade never died: older British and Australian speakers still say it naturally, and you will find it printed in old textbooks and on old ovens. It is used as a noun ("twenty degrees centigrade") and as an adjective ("a centigrade scale"). Americans in daily life use neither — they use Fahrenheit.
