    The day or year that falls exactly one hundred years after something happened — a school's founding, a war, a writer's birth — and, as an adjective, anything belonging to that occasion: a centenary concert, centenary celebrations. It always points back to an event, so it normally comes with of: the centenary of the university, the centenary of her death. British English prefers centenary; American English much prefers centennial, which is the word you will see in most films and websites. Both are correct; they are the same idea in two accents.
