A Celt is a person from the old peoples of Britain and western Europe before the Romans came — and, later, someone whose family comes from those groups, such as Irish, Welsh, Scottish, Breton, or Cornish people. History books like a tidy “Celtic race,” though actually the old groups were many, and the modern idea of “the Celts” was partly rebuilt in the 1800s. The English word is from the name the Greeks and Romans used. Until the mid-1800s people said it with an s (Selt). Then Irish and Welsh revival movements pushed a k sound (Kelt), closer to the old Greek. Both are still used. Sports names often keep the s: the Boston Celtics are SEL-tics.
