Celibacy is the state of not being married and not having sex, especially as a religious choice. Catholic priests, monks, and nuns promise celibacy as part of a life given to God. It is not the same as just being single, and it is not the same as waiting until marriage. Though actually, people sometimes use it more loosely for “I am not having sex at the moment.” In careful use it is a serious, often lifelong, promise. The word is rather formal. It has nothing to do with celebrate, even though the beginning looks a little similar.
