A yard full of pens. Animals standing in rows, and buyers walking slowly along the rail, looking each one over and deciding what it is worth. Nothing about the animal counts except what can be seen from outside. Both meanings of this phrase live inside that one scene: the first is the scene itself, the second is what happens when people are put in it.
