To categorize is to put people or things into groups according to the type of person or thing they are. You decide the kinds, then you sort. A shop categorizes clothes by size; a teacher might categorize questions as easy or hard. It is a normal school-and-work verb, not emotional by itself. Though actually, when we categorize people, the group we choose can carry a judgment we have not named. American spelling is categorize; British spelling is often categorise. Same meaning.
