A catchall is a drawer, a cupboard, or some other spot where you drop small things that have no proper home: rubber bands, spare keys, old tickets, a charger that belongs to nobody. It is the junk-drawer idea — one place that 'catches all' the bits. This spelling as one word is common in American English for the physical place. Though actually the hyphenated catch-all is the same family of thought, just used more often for words, rules, and leftover categories than for furniture. If someone says 'the catchall in the kitchen,' they mean a place, not a law. Some households have more than one: a bowl by the door, a drawer in the hall, a box in a cupboard.
