    Cast-offs are the clothes you no longer wear and give to someone else — what families call hand-me-downs when they go from an older child to a younger one. The word is almost always plural: people say “my sister’s cast-offs,” not often “a cast-off” for one thing. It can sound a little sorry for the person who has to wear them, so be gentle with it. Same meaning-family as cast-off; this is the noun for the pile of clothes themselves.
