A cartwright is a person whose job is to build and repair carts — the wooden vehicles with wheels that were pulled by horses before cars existed. You will not meet many real cartwrights today, since almost nobody needs a cart built by hand anymore, but the word survives mostly as a family name (surname), the same way "Smith" comes from someone who worked with metal.
