Cartography is the activity of making maps — the whole craft, not one drawing. It is about how we show the world on a flat page: where north goes, how big things look, what a line or a colour is meant to mean. People have done this for a very long time; a lot of it now happens on computers. The person who does it is a . Students sometimes treat cartography as a fancy twin of geography. Geography is the study of the world; cartography is how we draw the pictures we use to find our way around it. You will hear the word in school, museums, and specialist talk more than in the kitchen.
組成From French cartographie: carte (map), ultimately from Ancient Greek khártēs (a sheet used as a map), plus -graphie from gráphō (to write). So carto- (map) + -graphy (writing / describing).
