    A cartload is how much a cart can hold — a cart being the old wagon a horse or a person pulls, not a car and not (in the first meaning) a supermarket trolley. So a cartload of hay or wood is the load that fills one of those wagons. People also stretch it, the way they stretch truckload: a cartload of papers can just mean a lot of papers, with no cart in sight. That looser use is informal. The literal use sounds a little old now; you meet it in farms, history, and stories more than in city talk, where truckload or often does the same job.
