A carrel is a small desk in a library, made for one person, with sides or a little wall so you are partly shut off from other people. Students use carrels for quiet reading and writing. Some are simple desks with partitions; some are tiny booths. It is a library and campus word — you would not call your desk at home a carrel. It is not a full private room, and it is not a table for a group.
