Carlisle is a city in the far north-west of England, close to Scotland. It is where the local government for has its main offices, so it is a real working city, not a tiny village on a map. For a long time it mattered as a border town, with a castle, because armies used to move between England and Scotland. People up there know it for the station, the cathedral, and the shops. In English you push the voice onto the second part: it sounds like “Car-LYLE,” not “CAR-liss-ul.” Though actually, the Car- at the front has nothing to do with cars. That is only how the old name looks after English it.
組成The name is very old. The first piece comes from an old British word for a fort (the same kind of word as Welsh caer). The rest comes from an old personal name, Luguwalos, which meant “the strength of Lugus” — Lugus was a god. So the place was “the fort of that man.” English later shortened it to Carlisle. The old Welsh name has an extra ending; the local British language of that area, Cumbric, did not keep it, and scholars are not sure why.
