In English you push the voice onto the second part英文裡重音放在第二個部分: it sounds like "Car-LYLE," not "CAR-liss-ul."聽起來像『Car-LYLE』,不是『CAR-liss-ul』。 Though actually, the Car- at the front has nothing to do with cars不過其實,前面的Car-跟car(汽車)一點關係都沒有。 That is only how the old name looks after English shortened it那只是這個古老地名經過英文縮減後看起來的樣子而已。

組成The name is very old. The first piece comes from an old British word for a fort (the same kind of word as Welsh caer). The rest comes from an old personal name, Luguwalos, which meant “the strength of Lugus” — Lugus was a god. So the place was “the fort of that man.” English later shortened it to Carlisle. The old Welsh name has an extra ending; the local British language of that area, Cumbric, did not keep it, and scholars are not sure why.
