Canyoning is a sport in which you go along the bottom of a canyon: you walk, climb, and swim in the fast river between the steep rock walls. The word is simply canyon plus -ing — you are doing the canyon, not only looking at it. In the United States people often call the same sport canyoneering. You usually wear a helmet and a thick suit for the water, and you use ropes where the rock drops away. Though actually, it is not a gentle walk beside the river to take photos. The water is strong and the sides are high, so you need a guide and training.
