A canyon is a deep valley with very steep sides of rock, and there is usually a river at the bottom. Over a very long time the river cuts the land down. The Grand Canyon in the United States is the one most picture. English borrowed the word from Spanish cañón. The same Spanish word also gave English cannon, the big gun: both started from a “tube” idea — a metal tube that , or a huge tube of rock with a river in it. Though actually, in Britain people often say gorge or for smaller cuts in the land, and keep canyon for the huge ones, especially in America; in American English canyon is the ordinary word. It is a normal geography and travel word, not slang.
