When something is cantilevered, a long piece of metal or wood sticks out from a wall or an upright post and holds it up. The far end has nothing under it: it hangs in the air. A shelf with no legs, a balcony that looks as if it floats, or the end of a bridge can be built this way. The hidden is that strong piece (a cantilever) fixed into the wall or post, so the weight does not need a second leg underneath. Builders like this because it leaves the space below empty — no extra posts in the way. You will meet the word in talk about buildings, bridges, and design. It sounds a little technical, but newspapers use it for balconies, roofs, and seats that hang out over open air. Though actually, on a big bridge the far end may later sit on a support; the idea is still that the beam carries the weight from one side.
