A beam that is held firmly at one end only, so the rest of it reaches out into empty space with nothing underneath holding it up. That is the whole idea: support at one end, air at the other. It is how a balcony hangs off the side of a building, how a shelf can appear to float on a wall, how a diving board springs, and how some large bridges are built out from each side until the two arms meet. Engineers and architects use it constantly, and it works as a noun (the roof rests on two cantilevers) and as an adjective before another noun (a cantilever bridge, a cantilever chair). It is also a verb: the balcony is cantilevered out over the street. It is a technical word, but a common enough one that people describing buildings and furniture will use it.

The first half is uncertain — probably cant, meaning a slope or a corner, though an early form cantlapper muddies the story, and some suggest Spanish can, a builder's name for a beam-end sticking out of a wall. Worth knowing that the tidy "cant + lever" answer is a best guess, not a settled fact.
