A cannonade is a long, heavy attack with large guns — not one boom, but shot after shot, often for many minutes or hours. Armies used it to smash walls or people before soldiers moved in. You meet the word in history books, war reports, and slightly old-fashioned writing more than in daily talk; people now often say heavy shelling or artillery fire instead. Writers sometimes stretch it: a cannonade of questions or complaints means the words come hard and fast, like shots. That stretch sounds a bit . The word can also be a verb: to cannonade a place is to attack it in that way.
