A caner, in informal British English, is someone who drinks a lot of alcohol. It often paints a person who goes out, drinks hard, and treats it as a habit or a weekend sport, not a quiet glass with dinner. You hear it among British speakers; it is slang, and it can sound or a little judging, depending on the voice. You would not put it in a formal essay, and it is not an American word. Though actually the same spelling can also mean a person who weaves cane into chairs — that is an older job-name, and it is not this sense.
