A cane is a stick used to help someone walk, especially older people or people recovering from an injury - a walking cane. Historically, a cane was also a long stick used to hit children as punishment in schools, a practice now banned in most places, though the word still appears in old stories or history lessons. Cane is also the word for the stem of certain plants, most 'sugar cane' - the tall plant that sugar is made from - or a bamboo cane used to support plants in a garden.
