Candide is a short, very famous novel from 1759 by the French writer Voltaire, and it is also the name of the young man in it. The book is a satire: it makes fun of an idea by telling a story that shows the idea failing. The idea it attacks is the cheerful teaching of Candide's tutor, Pangloss, that ours is 'the best of all possible worlds' and everything happens for the best. So Voltaire sends poor Candide through war, earthquake, robbery, and slavery, and after each disaster Pangloss explains why it was all for the best — which by then sounds ridiculous. At the end Candide stops arguing about the universe and says the famous line usually translated as 'we must cultivate our garden': stop debating whether the world is good, and go do the small, real work in front of you. In English, people who have never opened the book still use two things from it. 'Panglossian' means foolishly optimistic. And 'the best of all possible worlds' is almost always said with a sour smile, meaning the opposite. When someone calls a person 'a Candide', they mean sweet, trusting, and not ready for how the world really is. The name is French, so it sounds roughly like 'kon-DEED'.
