English borrowed the word from French, so it still feels a bit fancy; you meet it at receptions and in catering, not in a . Though actually, in French a canapé was first a sofa, and the snack is named as if the topping sits on the bread the way a person sits on a couch. Say CAN-uh-pay. In English the word is the food; the sofa meaning stayed in French.
組成Borrowed from French canapé. That French word first meant a sofa; further back it is a cousin of English canopy, from Latin conopeum (a couch with mosquito curtains). Canapé and canopy are doublets: two English words from the same older source.
