    A canopy is a covering that hangs or stretches above something, like a cloth top over a bed, a cover held above someone important, or the clear cover over a fighter jet's cockpit. In a forest, 'the canopy' is the layer formed high up by the leaves and branches of tall trees, like a roof over the forest floor.

From Middle English canapy, via Old French and Latin cōnōpēum 'mosquito net', from Greek κώνωψ 'mosquito'.
