A campstool is a small seat you fold up and carry. It has no back and usually no arms: cloth, canvas, or leather stretched over a frame that opens into an X. People take one camping, fishing, or to a field where there are no chairs. The camp half is the same camp as camping — a stool for camp, not a living-room chair. Catalogues and older books like the one-word form; many people now just say folding stool, which is the same thing said more plainly. It is a practical word, not a fancy one.
