A campanile is a tall tower built to hold bells, standing by itself rather than growing out of a church roof. You see them especially in Italy; the Leaning Tower of is a campanile, even if most visitors never use that word. Ordinary English usually just says bell tower. Architects and travel writers keep the Italian word when they want to stress that the tower is separate from the church or hall beside it. A steeple is typically part of the church; a campanile is the free-standing kind. It is a rather learned word — fine in a , a little if you are only asking for directions.
