People there speak many local languages,當地人講很多本地語言,and the official languages are French and English,官方語言則是法文和英文,because the land was once split between French and British rule.
The English name comes, through French, from a Portuguese name meaning “river of .” In 1472, sailors with the Portuguese explorer ão do Pó (also called Fernando Pó) were struck by how many were in the Wouri river mouth — the kind now called the Cameroon ghost shrimp — and they named it Rio dos Camarões. That name became French Cameroun, then English Cameroon. So the country-name is, in a way, a story, not a made-up English word.
The English name comes, through French,英文名字是經過法文傳過來的,from a Portuguese name meaning "river of prawns." In 1472, sailors with the Portuguese explorer Fernão do Pó (also called Fernando Pó)1472年,跟著葡萄牙探險家Fernão do Pó費爾南多.波(也叫Fernando Pó)出海的水手,were struck by how many prawns were in the Wouri river mouth被Wouri河河口大量的蝦子嚇到——— the kind now called the Cameroon ghost shrimp —就是現在叫做Cameroon ghost shrimp喀麥隆幽靈蝦的那種——and they named it Rio dos Camarões. Rio dos Camarões。That name became French Cameroun, then English Cameroon. Cameroon。So the country-name is, in a roundabout way, a prawn story,所以這個國名說到底其實是個蝦子的故事,not a made-up English word.
Borrowed from French Cameroun, from Portuguese Camarões, short for Rio dos Camarões, “river of prawns.” Portuguese camarão (prawn) goes back to Latin cammārus, from Ancient Greek κάμμαρος (kámmaros).
