Camelhair is a thick, soft cloth, usually a warm yellowish brown. It is made from the hair of camels, often mixed with wool, and it is a classic fabric for good winter coats. The colour is part of the idea: people picture a sandy, light-brown coat, not black or navy. Tailors also use it for jackets and, less often, for blankets. You may also see camel hair written as two words, or camel-hair with a hyphen; they are the same cloth. There are also “camel-hair” paintbrushes — though actually many of those brushes are not camel at all, and the old name just stayed. The sense here is the coat cloth: a warm, slightly shiny, yellowish-brown fabric with a quiet, traditional feel, a bit like talking about tweed or cashmere. It is a shop-and-sewing word, not slang.
