Cambridgeshire is a county in eastern England. A county here is a large local area with its own towns and countryside. The main town — and the one people know worldwide — is Cambridge, the old university city. Around it there is a lot of flat farming land, and the north of the county reaches toward the Fens, which used to be wet marsh. People who live there may shorten the name to Cambs in addresses and newspapers. Cambridge is the city; Cambridgeshire is the whole county. Visitors often say Cambridge for both, and though actually that is a little loose, everyone still understands. It is an ordinary place-name, not a metaphor and not slang.
