The calyx is the green outer part of a flower: the small leaf-like pieces that wrap the bud and protect it before it opens. After the flower shows its , the calyx often stays as a little green cup at the base. Biology teachers and garden books use the word; you will not hear it at the florist's stall, where people just say the green bit. Though actually, those green pieces each have a name, , and the calyx is the whole set together. It is a school science word, from an old Greek and Latin word for a husk or the case of a bud.
