1. 1

Calfskin is the skin of a young cow (a calf), cleaned and made into leather. Shoes, bags, gloves, and the covers of fine books are often made from it. It is thinner and softer than leather from a grown cow, so it feels smooth and takes a nice finish. It is a shop-and-workshop word more than a home word: a or a label will say calfskin; most people would just say leather. Though actually, English has two different “calf” words that look the same — the animal, and the back of your lower leg. Calfskin is only from the animal.
