The Cairngorms are a group of mountains in the Highlands of Scotland, and the land around them. People go there to walk and climb; the weather can turn hard even in summer. The ski centre at is in the Cairngorms. You treat the name as a plural place, like the Alps: the Cairngorms are, not is. Always a capital C. The name comes from one peak, Gorm. Though actually, that name is not “many piles of stones.” It is closer to “blue ” — a blue-green mountain. English just kept the sound and used it for the whole range.

組成From the mountain Cairn Gorm. Cairn is the stone pile; in Scottish Gaelic, gorm is a colour word in the blue-green family. So the peak is, in that language, something like “blue cairn.” The range took the peak’s name.
