Caginess is the closed, careful quality itself — the habit of not showing what you know or what you will do. You hear it about people, voices, and sometimes about companies or teams that will not give a straight answer. It is a little informal, the same family as cagey, and it often carries a small feeling of distrust: not “this person is wise,” but “this person is holding something back.” Though actually, caginess is not always a bad thing. In a hard talk, a little caginess can just mean you are not ready to say everything yet. It is more a written word; in speech people more often just say someone is being cagey.
