A bustier is a tight piece of clothing for a woman’s upper body. It holds the chest and usually runs down to the waist, or a little past it. It does not cover the shoulders or the arms: it is strapless, or it has only very thin straps. People wear it as underwear, or as a top you can see, especially in the evening or on a stage. It often has thin stiff strips inside so it keeps a firm shape, a bit like a short corset — though actually a real corset is usually longer and is made to pull the waist in hard. A bustier is more about holding and showing the chest. Fashion shops and clothing labels use this word; it is not a word for an ordinary T-shirt or a bra.
