    To kiss someone in a friendly, unromantic way — the quick kiss on the cheek you give an aunt, a child, or an old friend. It works as a verb ('He bussed her on the cheek') and as a noun for the kiss itself ('She gave the baby a buss'). You should know clearly what kind of word this is: it is old-fashioned and now quite rare. You will meet it in older books, in poems, or in a newspaper trying to sound playful, but almost never in ordinary speech today. If you used it in conversation, people would understand you and probably smile at how quaint it sounded. For real life, say 'kiss', 'peck', or 'kiss on the cheek'. The sound of the word does part of the work — it the small noise of a kiss. Old dictionaries link it to Latin basium and French baiser, and it may connect to those, but the shape of the English word is largely just the sound itself.
