A busboy is a restaurant worker whose job is to clear tables: take away dirty plates, glasses, and leftover food, wipe the table, and get it ready for the next guests. The waiter takes the order and brings the food; the busboy does the clearing and the small carrying jobs. You will hear this word most in American English. Though actually, it is not always a boy, and not always young — women do this job too. Many restaurants now say busser, which does not point at gender, because “boy” in old job titles can sound as if you are talking down to the worker. The job is real work, but it is often a starter job, and the old name can feel a bit rough. As a verb, to bus a table means to clear it. The first half is a short form of an old word, omnibus, once used for a helper who did many small jobs — the same “for all” Latin word that also gave us the bus you ride. So the restaurant bus and the vehicle bus are cousins, which surprises people.
