A burqa is a long piece of clothing that some Muslim women wear. It covers the head, the face, and the whole body, with only a small mesh or screen over the eyes so she can see out. Other people cannot see her face at all. Not every Muslim woman wears one, and not every country asks for it. In some places it is common; in many others women cover far less, or cover in a different way. People outside those communities often say burqa for any covering, which is tidy and wrong: a is usually a scarf for the hair and neck with the face open; a covers the face but leaves the eyes; a is a cloak; a burqa is the full cover with that screen. In English it is a factual word in news and school books, though it can sound political because people argue about dress and law. You will meet it in writing more than in everyday chat in Taiwan.
