A bumblebee is a large, round, very hairy bee. Most are black and yellow, sometimes with orange, and they fly with a deep buzz that sounds heavier than a small . They look , dropping onto flowers and crawling about. They nest in holes in the ground, in long grass, or in old bird boxes — not in a big hanging hive. They can sting, but they are usually gentle unless you really bother them. The name comes from the buzzing, way they go. This is the insect; other uses of the spelling are a different story.

組成bumble (to buzz or boom; also to move in a clumsy humming way) + bee. From the 1520s, replacing Middle English humbul-be, and mixed with older bombeln (“to boom, buzz”).
