Built-in means a thing is made as a part of a larger thing. You cannot take it out, or you are not meant to. A built-in belongs to the wall. A phone with a built-in camera has the camera inside the body. A program can have built-in tools that come with it. People also say the built-ins for and shelves that belong to the room. Though actually, The house was built in 1980 is different: that is the verb build, plus in, plus a year. That is when it was made, not fixed inside. British English sometimes as one word for the same idea.
